Setting up a Rally Integration

If you use Rally to manage your development workflow, you can set up a direct integration between ProdPad and Rally.

The integration allows you to push ideas or individual user stories to Rally, once you've completed your specs in ProdPad.

Getting the integration with Rally set up is easy, and just requires you to follow these steps:

Part 1: Setting up the Rally integration in ProdPad
Part 2: Get your Team on board
Part 3: Pushing Ideas to Rally

Part 1: Setting up the Rally integration in ProdPad

To start, log in to ProdPad as an Admin, and head to the Integrations page. On the right-hand side of the page, select Rally from the list in the available "New Integration" options.

Select Rally from the list in the available "New Integration" options

Enter a name for the integration and then Rally authorization credentials. We store the password securely encrypted in the database.

If you have SSO set up on Rally, please add ProdPad as an exception.

Enter a name for the integration and then Rally authorization credentials

You will now see a list of all of the projects* within your Rally account that you can push ideas to. Select one of the projects by clicking on the name.

*Note: the list will only show 200 projects. Please get in contact if you have more than 200 projects in Rally

In the next step, you will see a form that allows you to map the fields from the Idea Canvas to the fields in Rally for each issue. You can select none, 1 or more fields from the Idea Canvas to be added to each Rally field. To map multiple fields, hold down the ctrl key and select each field you want to map.

Our suggested mapping is:

Rally Work Item field Recommended ProdPad field
Name Title
Description Description, Business case, Function specs
Attachments Designs, Files

Setting up mapping rules

Once you have selected the mapping, submit the form by clicking 'Map fields' and you will be returned to the integrations page.

Your Rally integration is now ready to use!

Once pushed to Rally Status mapping will reflect any status changes as your team works on ideas. Please note no further information will be mapped back/to from the integration to avoid overwriting sensitive information.

Part 2: Get your Team on board

To make it easy for your team to use the same integration mappings, you can share your integration with your team.

In your Integrations list, click on the 'Teamwide' setting.

Once this is done, anyone in your ProdPad account can log in and go to the Integrations & API page, and select the original integration in the 'Available Integrations' list.

Part 3: Pushing Ideas to Rally

Now that you've got an active integration with Rally set up, it's time to start pushing finished ideas from ProdPad to Rally.

Head to your Ideas List, and pick an idea that’s ready for development. In the Idea Canvas page, click on Push. This will open up a modal window where you can choose to push the Idea via the Rally integration you've set up, or any of your other integrations.

Push the Idea via the Rally integration

You should see the Rally integration you just created.

If you created any user stories, you will have the option of pushing them at the same time as the idea, or you can always push them at a later time.

On the Idea Canvas now, there will be a link to the Rally ticket in the ‘Links’ section, and the ticket in Rally will link back to the ProdPad idea.

Statuses will now sync back from Rally as they move through the different development stages!

Don’t worry about pushing an idea without a title. ProdPad accounts for that by substituting in the idea number if the title isn’t available. If you wish to edit the name, you can hover over the link name and click on the pencil.

Top Tip

Looking to add multiple projects?

If you wish to set up another project within Rally, simply repeat the steps above. You may set up as many integrations as you like - and as long as they're the same account (base URL) they will only count as one integration.
